FAQ: 3 Things to Avoid with Beeswax Wrap
Unpopular opinion: beeswax wrap is not the right wrap for every food storage problem.
Beeswax wrap is not a plastic wrap alternative. That’s right, it simply can’t do everything plastic wrap can do and that’s cool because its main gig is to save your freshest food!
Here are 3 food storage problems that can’t be solved by beeswax wrap:
👀 Wrapping raw meat: Beeswax wrap is washed with cold water so it isn’t suitable for wrapping raw meat. When portioning and/or freezing meat, individually wrap the portions in butcher or parchment and seal in a freezer friendly container or bag.
👀 Wrapping greasy or oily food: Beeswax is oleophilic, that means it absorbs oil easily. Placing an oily slice of pizza on beeswax wrap is a sure fire way to destroy it. Instead of using your precious Abeego, reach for an oleophobic material, like glass or foil if you really need something light and compact.
👀 Covering/storing hot food: Yep, you guessed it, melted beeswax wrap and what’s worse is the steam may cause your wrap to flake afterwards. Here’s why, beeswax is more like oil when it’s hot so it doesn’t mix with water. When the water evaporates you’re left with a flaky wrap. In this case, time is your best friend but if you need to take the food somewhere foil might be the solve.
Over the years, beeswax wrap has been labelled as a plastic wrap alternative and sadly that’s fuelled the belief it can be used interchangeably with plastic. It can’t. Plastic wrap can do all three of the jobs listed above, beeswax wrap can’t do any of them.
If we had a magic wand we’d erase the phrase “plastic wrap alternative” in relation to Abeego and beeswax wrap in general. We wish the world could see it the way we do, as the single most important innovation in fresh food storage ever!
If this isn’t your first time hearing about beeswax wrap or you’ve been waiting to run out of plastic wrap before jumping in, this is your sign to give it a try now. Honestly, you’ll wonder how you and your fresh food ever lived without it.
