Abeego | The First B Corp™ Certified Beeswax Wrap in Canada
After months of rigor, hard work, and dedication, we’ve finally achieved the only existing certification that measures a company’s entire social and environmental performance.
We’re B Corp™ Certified.
Building a business with these values has always been in our DNA, and it’s manifested in a recognized official certification.
WHAT IS A B CORP™ CERTIFIED COMPANY?
“Certified B Corporations™ are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps™ are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.” -B Corp™
Simply put: B Corps™ are leaders of a global movement of people using business as a Force for Good™.
We’re in good company. There are nearly 4,000 B Corps™ in 150 industries and 74 countries worldwide, including Patagonia, TenTree, Ben & Jerry’s, and more.
THE CERTIFICATION PROCESS
To become B Corp™ certified, we had to achieve a minimum verified score on the B Impact Assessment—a rigorous assessment of Abeego’s impact on its team, customers, community, and environment.
Abeego has always been a vehicle to make a positive impact in the community. We pay our entire team a living wage, give back to organizations like The Ron Finley Project and Mamas for Mamas, and run a near zero-waste manufacturing facility. It’s these reasons, and many more, that contributed to our successful certification.
Far beyond a few simple tick boxes that evaluate our product, the certification process dug deep into all things Abeego. B Corp™ investigated everything from our internal policies, manufacturers, employee benefits, even our in-office composting.
It’s a thorough process because it needs to be. Radical change doesn’t happen unless we’re held accountable. In fact, only about 1 in 3 companies who submit for B Corp™ certification will successfully become certified.
We aren’t kidding when we say they got all up in our business.
B CORP™ & OUR CORE VALUES
LIVE WHERE LOGIC & INSPIRATION MEET
Equally weighted like two sides of the same coin, being a B Corp™ certified company satisfies both.
Inspirational: We’re in good company. As a B Corp™ certified organization, Abeego is among an ever-growing community of over 4,000 businesses committed to using business as a force for good.
Logical: There is no future of business unless businesses act with equity, justice, and conscience. All B Corps™, big and small, are held to the same social and environmental standards and contribute to a path forward where businesses can thrive together in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
DO GOOD. DO BETTER.
We didn’t receive a perfect score on the B Corp™ assessment. We do good things, and we recognize the infinite opportunity to do better things. Every three years, we need to recertify. What’s more? We need to increase our score every time. Before our next certification, we’ll be improving and implementing more standards for onboarding new suppliers and service providers, developing our employee equity program, and refining our annual job reviews.
HUNGER TO FEED.
B Corp™ has provided us with a table around which we can commune with 4,000+ businesses making a positive impact on the world. We thrive off of reciprocity and see beautiful opportunities to exchange wisdom with the B Corp™ community and help one another grow into stronger, more resilient forces for good.
APPRECIATE EVERYONE & EVERYTHING.
We can do more together than we can alone, and we cherish the B Corp™ community’s vast array of industries, missions, and locations.. Every one of these certified organizations brings something unique to co-create the world we’re in pursuit of.
Q&A WITH ABEEGO FOUNDER & CEO, TONI DESROSIERS
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE OFFICIALLY B CORP™ CERTIFIED?
Earning our B Corp™ certification feels like a well deserved reward. For 13 years, we have been intentionally building a company that’s both sustainable and regenerative. One of my favorite things about founding and leading a company is the ability to show the world what good a company can do when you choose to challenge the archaic yet often indisputed methods of running a business. We do things the Abeego way—our business is a tool to build stronger communities and a better environment. Becoming B Corp™ certified is like a giant check mark to justify this method and solidifies my resolve to continue in this way.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER COMPANIES THINKING ABOUT BECOMING B CORP™ CERTIFIED?
We need more B Corps™ in the world. While having a B Corp™ certification can seem like a competitive advantage, I hope there comes a day when all companies are a Force for Good. It’s a movement with momentum like I’ve never seen and I can’t wait to be among even more businesses doing work for the benefit of all.
Companies are striving to create better work environments, be kinder to the environment and give back to the community like never before. Making these moves comes with a lot of hard work, and being B Corp™ certified helps to hold businesses and leaders accountable to these moves even if enticed by an easier path.
Join the momentum, be recognized for your good work, and mark your footprint on the path to a better world. The more B Corps™ the merrier!
WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR BRANDS TO BECOME B CORP™ CERTIFIED AND WHY SHOULD CONSUMERS CARE?
I love how discerning and intentional consumers are becoming with every purchase. Businesses should embrace this as an opportunity, not a challenge, and be a part of the positive shift.
As a consumer myself, I take pride in doing so responsibly and in a way that ensures the products I use align to the values I hold. Seeing the B Corp™ logo helps me make purchasing decisions with ease and is a way for me to vote for businesses committed to building a better world.
