From Us To You | Happy Earth Day
Let's disrupt normalized food waste.
Let's make changes in our kitchen to reduce what we toss in the compost.
Let's build a more sustainable food system that nourishes both people and Mother Earth.
Over the years we have met a ton of people and organizations doing remarkable things in the food waste movement. Today, let's harness the inspiration from these champions to make a difference right in our own kitchens. We asked these champions to share their top tips with you. Dig in below!
Do Something, Especially when you Can't do Everything
"Getting to know your food as living, breathing organisms is the first step to understanding its life cycle. Start by questioning each piece of food before you toss it in the compost. Kale stems or carrot tops? There's a pesto for that. Strawberry tops or kiwi skins? Add it to your next immunity smoothie!"
-Toni Desrosiers | Abeego Founder & CEO
Make your Centerpiece a Part of the Meal
"Creating a beautiful tablescape doesn’t mean relying on freshly purchased flowers that will be tossed a few days later. Are you serving fruit for dessert? A bowl of oranges makes a perfect centerpiece."
-Purslane, NY | The first zero waste catering & food delivery service.
"Think about the soup of the day at your favorite restaurant. Soups have been a clever chef's way of recycling yesterday's leftovers into today's dinner. Today, there is even more pressure on chefs to use all of the precious organic produce and local meats that come into their kitchens--hence the growth of nose-to-tail and root-to-stem items on the best menus, from house-made sausage and terrines to beet and radish leaves in the salad."

"Besides shopping with a plan and avoiding overbuying, this is probably the most impactful way you can reduce how much food you waste, especially when it comes to tender (and expensive!) items like fruits, vegetables, & herbs. Little switches like not putting your onions and potatoes together or storing your herbs in a jar of water in the fridge end up saving your food and money!"
