Chapter 11: First Plastic Wrap, Next the Fridge

I despise the refrigerator.
I feel intermittent irritation with every noisy interruption of its intrusive built-in compression system.
I feel disappointment swell when I stupidly trust it to care for a delicate herb even though it burned me before.
I feel my blood rise when I clear a spot in my busy schedule to clean it only to rehash its design flaws with every wipe of my cloth.
I’m peeved by the space it demands, its mere presence owning the room when it sits half empty half the time.
I feel a grinding annoyance with its silly games of hide and seek that force me to question my memory when I swear there’s a jar of jam in there somewhere.
Most of all, I’m frustrated and a little inspired that the refrigerator, a big plastic airtight box that destroys fresh food as fast as you can say cilantro, is still heralded as “the way” in kitchens around the world.
I despise the refrigerator and that makes a great jumping off point for an invention.
The modern refrigerator, largely unchanged since 1928, is due for a top-to-bottom-overhaul. When I envision the future of fresh food cold preservation I see a cooling system that mimics nature's cooling systems, naturally breathable materials and a design that adapts to any household’s needs.
Who wants to work on that with me?
