This month, we're connecting with Jasmin Foster of Mash & Spread - a blog bursting with healthy breakfast recipes, nourishing lunches, and easy dinner ideas made with fresh & sustainable ingredients. Jasmin is also the founder of Farmers Market Society - a space for the beautiful photos, market-inspired recipes and tips she's curated from the local farmers' markets of Washington, DC.
WHAT DOES MASH & SPREAD AND THE FARMERS MARKET SOCIETY DO IN THE WORLD OF FOOD? WHAT IMPACT DO YOU OR DO YOU HOPE TO MAKE?
Mash and Spread is a safe space that explores healthy and balanced foods to live your best life. As a registered dietitian what I post on social media is a reflection of my food philosophy. Farmers Market Society is a creative space that explores local farmers markets in the Washington, DC area and celebrates seasonal food with simple and delicious recipes.

WHAT FOOD OR RECIPE PROVIDES YOU WITH A SENSE OF NOSTALGIA OR COMFORT?
Red velvet cake reminds me of my childhood. I have fond memories making red velvet cake with my grandmother as kid in Florida. We always used cream cheese frosting and topped with cake with pecans. Fish and grits, okra, collard greens, and seafood are comfort foods that all remind me of home.
HOW DOES FOOD CONNECT YOU TO THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU?
Food can be used to bond with your family by preparing meals together. You can use food as a setting to start conversation. I see first hand how food can help create community at local farmers markets. There's so many markets in the dc area, with each one in its own neighborhood. It provides people with direct access to local grown produce and goods.

WHAT DOES KEEP FOOD ALIVE MEAN TO YOU?
To me Keep Food Alive means preserving food as long as possible to reduce food waste. It’s so easy to waste food if it isn’t properly stored. It’s a necessary step to ensure we get the most out of our food.
WHO IS SOMEONE FROM THE FOOD COMMUNITY YOU'RE INSPIRED BY AND WHY?
I get a lot of inspiration from different food bloggers and photographers like The Bite Shot, Grand Baby Cakes, Walder Wellness, Moriah Brooke. They all have qualities that resonate with me.
